When we started there were no reference solutions to review and we went with our gut feeling but now the market is getting mature and we do have some references from different aspects covering the end to end provenance and tracking for the Food Supply Chain.
Please review the shared links and let me know your thoughts.

https://sovrin.org/ DID of all stakeholders for authenticating credibility. Can be used without a blockchain network and also can be integrated with Hyperledger Fabric if required.
We have to use specific features from the above to guarantee a competitive end to end provenance and tracking solution for enterprise clients.

Potential Challenges

FDA fails on food safety - Kennedy has a lot to fix

fda-food-safety-issues-2024-How potentially harmful additives have infiltrated America’s food.pdf  link

fda-food-safety-issues-2024-How potentially harmful additives have infiltrated America’s food.pdf. file

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for the nation’s top health post, has vowed to “get the chemicals out” of America’s food amid mounting concerns over the health effects of additives.

These chemical ingredients - designed to enhance the flavors, textures, colors and shelf life of ultra-processed foods - are in many of the foods that Americans eat. But who determines whether they are safe?

In many cases, it’s not the Food and Drug Administration that decides if chemical additives are safe to use in food. Instead, it’s the companies that make and sell the products that contain them.

Research shows that a regulatory loophole has allowed for America’s food to be saturated in largely unapproved additives

compare EU food safety regulations, compliance and effective health impacts to US FDA record

Compared to the US FDA, EU food safety regulations tend to be considered more stringent, with a greater emphasis on precautionary measures, particularly regarding additives and chemicals, often banning substances not yet definitively proven harmful, while the FDA may take a more risk-based approach, allowing certain ingredients unless proven unsafe; this results in a wider range of permitted food additives in the US than in the EU, leading to potential differences in health impacts between the two regions.
Key differences:
  • Precautionary Principle:
The EU generally applies a more cautious approach, often banning substances with potential health concerns even with limited scientific evidence, whereas the FDA may require more conclusive proof before restricting an ingredient.
  • Food Additive Approval:
In the EU, food additives must be proven safe before approval, while in the US, the burden of proof may sometimes lie on demonstrating harm before an additive is restricted.
  • Transparency and Public Engagement:
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) prioritizes transparency by publishing detailed scientific assessments and actively engaging with stakeholders, while the FDA may have a less open process.
Examples of differences in regulation:
  • Growth hormones:
The EU generally bans the use of bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk production, while it is permitted in the US.
  • Certain food dyes:
Several synthetic food dyes permitted in the US are banned in the EU due to potential health concerns.
  • GMO labeling:
The EU has stricter labeling requirements for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) compared to the US.
Potential health impacts:
  • Reduced exposure to potentially harmful chemicals:
Due to stricter regulations, the EU population may have lower exposure to certain food additives considered potentially carcinogenic or harmful.
  • Consumer perception:
Stricter EU regulations may lead to greater consumer confidence in the safety of food products.
Important considerations:
  • Complexity of comparison:
While the EU may appear more stringent overall, specific regulations can vary between countries within the EU and individual food items.
  • Scientific debate:
The debate about the appropriate level of stringency in food safety regulations is ongoing, with different perspectives on the balance between precaution and economic considerations.

Candidate Solutions

Farm to Plate - F2P solution

Quick review - 210803

  1. 1 year
    1. IF design were locked down prior to coding, with a good build plan and a good development team then this could be delivered in 2 months for sure at a lower cost
  2. built master data model with web app for entities
    1. created dynamic model to define organization relationships
    2. created a dynamic product definition to share between organizations
  3. solution architecture limited, EA architecture limited
  4. backend concepts, design need major improvement
  5. non-functional use cases ( security, performance, change management, identity, authorization ) needed
  6. need to think through domain use cases to id where automation, device integration and event streams are useful
  7. need to think through data consumption use cases for the transaction data to define logical data models and services for consumption
  8. backend services coding not efficient
